Diving with Whale Sharks in the Maldives — The Story Behind Gentle Giant

We had just docked at Dharavandhoo when our guide turned around and said, completely casually: "Ok guys, don't freak out. But we just received word there's a whale shark spotted. You have 5 minutes once we get to your accommodation to check in, get your gear, and be waiting outside."

We freaked out.

Within 5 minutes we had dumped everything... bags half open, rooms not even looked at, and were standing outside ready to go. I couldn't tell you what happened between that moment and being in the water. It was a complete blur. Getting to the boat, getting on the boat, riding out until the captain cut the engine.

He stopped us far from where the whale shark had been spotted. That's how ethical encounters work — you don't chase, you don't crowd, you don't disturb. If it wants to come to you, it will. So we slipped into the water and we waited. Floating quietly, looking around, trying not to make a sound.

And then this massive figure emerged in front of us.

There's no way to describe the size of a whale shark until you're in the water with one. It's not like seeing it in a documentary. It's not like anything you've seen before. The word that kept going through my head was submarine. This enormous, unhurried, impossibly beautiful creature just appeared... mouth wide, spots catching the light, tail moving in that slow, deliberate way that somehow covered distance effortlessly.

I froze.

Then I remembered I had a camera.

I was freediving with my Sony A7III in my Seafrogs housing, and it came right up to the surface... so close I could have reached out and touched it. I didn't, obviously. I just floated there, locked eyes with it, and captured everything I could. It was curious about us but unbothered. Just cruising. Like it had all the time in the world and we were a mildly interesting blip in its day.

That feeling of being that small, that humbled, in the presence of something that ancient and that gentle... I haven't stopped thinking about it since.

Gentle Giant is that moment.

It's available as a limited edition fine art print, limited to 50 prints worldwide, printed to order in Australia on professional Ilford paper.
